Computers often allow an investigator to recreate long deleted data and create a timeline of activity which could involve internet use, emails sent or documents created. This type of evidence can often be used successfully in both prosecution and defence matters.

Evidence from mobile phones should also be considered part of many cases as deleted text messages or received/made call data can be gathered and verified.

Procedure for
preserving evidence
on a PC

1. Do not touch the computer in ANY way, do not shut it down or close any open applications. It may seem obvious but do NOT let the user of the computer back in the room or anywhere near the PC.

2. If possible take a picture of the work area. For example, it is surprising how often elements in the work area help us find passwords.

3. Take a picture of the screen.

4. Many companies will tell you to pull the computer plug from the wall.  DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL YOU CALL US.  You may lose some critical volitile data.
